What is Coronavirus, also known as COVID-19?

COVID-19 is a respiratory illness that can spread from person to person. Symptoms may include fever, cough, and shortness of breath.

Who is at higher risk?

Those at higher risk include older adults and people with serious chronic medical conditions like:

  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • Lung Disease
How does COVID-19 spread?

The virus is mainly spread from person-to-person, such as between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet) and through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes, but this is not the thought to be the main way the virus spreads.

What can I do to prevent coronavirus?

You can reduce your risk for getting and spreading viral respiratory infections, including the flu and common cold with simple steps.

  • Cover your coughs and sneezes with a sleeve or tissue
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds, or if soap and water are not available, use alcohol hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, mouth, and nose.
  • Stay home if you are sick.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
